We saw The German yesterday for B’s scan results. We arrived early and went through the usual excruciating process of making smalltalk with an Oncologist. I resisted the urge to shout ‘I don’t care about your holiday in Devon, your children could have been eaten by a shark for all I care. Just tell us what’s happening inside B’s head!’
The results are good. There is no activity or growth, in fact there is even a slight reduction in the size of the remaining mass. It’s possibly the only situation in which the word ‘shrinkage’ is good news to a man.
We celebrated by proceeding directly to John Lewis and buying a load of homewares. That’s the sort of thing that excites us.
B now has a reprieve until his next scan, which will be in January 2014. As he’s gone back to private treatment it is partly up to him how often he has these scans. The German doesn’t recommend leaving it longer than 6 months, but neither B nor I really want them to be done more often than that. I know some people who have them every 2 or 3 months which must be awful – no sooner do you have the results than you are thinking about the next one. So while he has the ability to choose, a longer period between these stressful events seems to be the way to go.
